Children: A Commitment of All

Compartilhe:
  • In 2014, the federal government’s crime report hotline received three complaints of sexual abuse of children per hour.
  • Childbirth is the main cause of hospitalization of girls between 9 and 19 years of age.
  • In Brazil, accidents such as drowning, falls, burns and intoxication are still the main cause of death for children from 0 to 4 years of age. Worldwide, 830,000 children die from them each year. Now, the details: 60% of these accidents occur within the home and 90% of these traumas could have been avoided with preventive measures!

We at the Criança é Vida (Child is Life) Institute believe in the duty to protect our children – and teach them to protect themselves – from all this and much more.

Since 1996, we have worked to help build a healthier country, providing education to children and adults.

It has been almost 20 years of providing information and knowledge so that families and communities know how to ensure the care, education, affection and protection that all children need to grow up with physical, emotional and social health.

In 2014 alone, we helped almost 44,000 people. Of these, more than 20,000 were children, who benefited directly from our actions. All this through the daily work of close to 30 professionals, including employees, service providers, consultants and directors, as well as the participation of our advisors.

Now, you too can join us and adopt our cause

We are a non-profit organization and our income is invested in undertaking projects and paying the professionals directly involved in their execution. Therefore, cash donations are very important to making our projects possible and expanding their reach.

How We Work

With simple and accessible language, our projects are written by doctors, psychologists and biologists. We address themes that range from personal hygiene to healthy food to domestic violence and sex education, among others. Our way of conveying knowledge prioritizes levity and fun, and our teaching materials are inexpensive, making their large-scale multiplication possible in any part of Brazil.

We train educators and employees of institutions that deal directly with children. They are the ones who will become multipliers of the concepts taught in our projects to children and families of the communities where they operate.

“The project is excellent and has had wonderful results. The mothers comment on the changes in their children. We also learn in order to better educate our own children. It is all so important, so interesting. You have a special way to communicate complex topics – you do it all in a calm way. Everything is dealt with in a clear way. The children are really learning things that I am sure they will benefit from for the rest of their lives.”

In this aspect, it is black girls who end up suffering most. In addition to not being white, they also do not feel pretty, since they do not meet the established standards. It is also not unusual for them to be victims of offensive comments in relation to their physical characteristics, such as frizzy hair, which contributes to increasing their feelings of inadequacy and reducing their self-esteem.

Black, 11 years of age, Soffia could be only one more girl representing this Brazilian reality. She has already suffered from prejudice and even already tried to adapt to the standards of beauty by straightening her hair… But it was then that she realized that she was not satisfied trying to be what she wasn’t. She saw that she could be different and still be happy.
